Modern vehicles are incredibly complex when compared to their predecessors. That being said, they still face the same enemies of the very first engines. Yes, I am talking about friction and the resulting heat it causes.

When it comes to keeping your car on the road, you need to maintain it. This means you need to understand the ins and outs of when to change motor oil to make sure friction and heat do not shorten the life of your engine.

Oil will only perform for so long under the stressful conditions found in the engine of a modern car. This leads us to the question of how often you should change the oil in your car.

What answer immediately popped into your mind? I bet it was that the oil should be changed every three months or 3,000 miles, whichever came first. Right? Somewhere, an oil marketing executive has a big grin on their face.

As with many things we know, the 3 and 3 rule is wrong. It is just marketing with no basis in fact. Every car performs differently and does different tasks. This means there is a different guideline for each of them.

The simple truth is there is no one standard mileage or time period that should be used for oil changes. A big Ford truck simple runs differently than a Honda Civic. The oil in the truck will need to be changed well before the oil in the Honda.

Still, we need some type of guideline right? Well, you have one. For men, this will be painful. Yes, we will have to read directions. In the owners manual for the car, we can find the information for the specific needs of our vehicle.

You can expect to find a recommendation regarding the miles and time period for the oil change in the manual. There should also be a recommendation on the weight of oil and specific oil brand that should be used.

The weight of oil to be used is absolutely vital. Do not just throw anything in your engine. You can kill the engine and violate any warranty. Do not worry too much about the brand, however. You can use whatever you like in most cases.

If you can, try to go with synthetic oil for your car. They last much longer. A Mini Cooper, for instance, will go up to 17,000 miles between oil changes running on Castrol Synthetic. Not bad, eh?

When it comes to motor oil, I actually have a favorite brand. Mobil 1 is something I highly recommend and have had recommended to me by auto mechanics. It is more expensive, but I have never had engine problems using it.

Stop throwing away money by unnecessarily paying for oil changes ever 3,000 miles. Give your owners manual a read and follow those directions. You will undoubtedly save some serious money.

Shopping around for a new car need not cost you an arm and a leg, even in the current financial situation. With a few simple and straight forward tips, you can keep down the cost of buying your next car. We sell used cars in Southport and would like to offer you some of our advice.

1) Look for a quality used car instead of a car straight from the production line. Brand new cars quickly loose a lot of their value. Not only in taxes, saved especially for new cars, but also in the value. Once a car has been used, even for just a few miles, it’s lost some of it’s value.

2) Look for new cars that have been used as demonstration vehicles. The garages will have looked after them well - they want the cars to give a good impression to potential buyers. But because they have been used, even if only for a hundred miles, their value is much less. Therefore, the car showroom is willing to offer a huge discount for you to take the car off their hands.

3) Buy at the end of the month. If you are buying a used car or a new car from a car salesroom, then the chances are that the salesman is working to targets. Especially in the current financial climate when people aren’t spending, salesmen will be missing their targets and keen to make as many sales as possible, especially just before the targets end at the end of the month. Whilst they will be keener to force a sale onto would be buyers, they will also be keener to negotiate the sale to ensure that it does run to completion and you don’t walk away. Work this knowledge to your advantage to get the best deal possible, car insurance price compare including.

4) Do your homework. Look around for used cars that interest you locally and then check prices in other sales rooms, the press and industry magazines. Make sure that the prices you are being quoted are comparable to those shown elsewhere.

5) Sort your finance the proper way. Don’t just accept the finance offered by the salesroom, or even finance from car loan specialists. An unsecured bank loan may be cheaper in the long term. Ask your bank for an illustration of how much the repayments would be on the likely loan you would need and then compare that to the cost of the load from the salesroom.

6) Be wary of add ons - many car sales rooms increase the price a lotby offering warranties for everything under the sun. Maintenance, loss of value if the car is stolen, paintwork protection etc. Ask yourself, do you really need to insure your car against all of these possibilities?

Buying a new or used car need not be expensive. Selling Southport used cars, we will offer you friendly and honest advice - and we hope that your local dealer will help you in the same way. Do your homework first and buy at the right time and you might get an excellent deal.

Given the inexorable rise in gas prices of late, water as fuel for cars is getting a closer inspection by many people. Despite what the name might suggest, an engine that runs on water wouldn’t really be running on the water itself, but instead extracting the hydrogen gas from the water to be used as fuel. By using certain specialized equipment, the hydrogen can be separated from the oxygen in water and injected into the car’s fuel lines.

The two most common systems for using water as fuel for vehicles are a hybrid system, which adds hydrogen gas to your vehicle’s engine and the second system which relies on hydrogen gas production to fuel the engine either on board or separately.

Hybrid hydrogen gas systems reduce the amount of gasoline your vehicle uses thus extending your miles per gallon while also reducing your vehicle emissions, as the combination of gas and hydrogen gives a cleaner burn, zero emissions fuel. When burned by itself with only oxygen, hydrogen emissions are just water vapor.

Kits for converting to water as fuel for cars range in price from less than a hundred dollars for plans to build your own system using easy to find parts from auto parts and hardware stores, to kits costing several thousand dollars that include everything needed to convert your vehicle. True water as fuel for cars systems convert your vehicle to one hundred percent hydrogen fuel. This type of system is the most expensive and complicated to install but when you are done your visits to the gas station are over. Using much larger water holding tanks, or fuel cells with internal hydrogen processing equipment, these systems typically require much more room in the vehicle to install.

If you live near a facility that produces hydrogen, such as a hydrogen fuel station or production plant, you can get a system that has a tank where you can pump in hydrogen gas. These facilities do the work of converting water into hydrogen fuel, so you don’t have to extract the hydrogen yourself.

Auto manufacturers like as Honda and BMW will likely feature storage tanks for extra water as fuel for cars as hydrogen fueling systems are not very common. These new hydrogen/gasoline hybrid systems will actually be the same type of gasoline engines currently in use that will be modified to allow the use of hydrogen gas as fuel.

The water as fuel for cars technology or the creating of hydrogen gas as a fuel, has existed for over one hundred of years and has been used in many different devices. It is even used in outer space. Due to various technical complications and the relative ease that existed in finding oil for gasoline, not much effort has been put into hydrogen gas technology. Given the finite nature of oil and the increase in fuel prices this could very well change in the next few years. It will be many years before hydrogen filling stations dot the nation, but you can fuel your car with water for gas technology right now.

This situation probably has happened to everyone: You're driving along the road and you notice that your car doesn't sound all that good. Before you realize what's happening, your poor car takes its last gasps on the side of the road. You need a new car.

by Eric Jilson

This situation probably has happened to everyone: You’re driving along the road and you notice that your car doesn’t sound all that good. Before you realize what’s happening, your poor car takes its last gasps on the side of the road. You need a new car.

Television ads tell you that you need a new car. Although a new car does sound appealing, you’ve also heard from friends that buying a new car is a better idea in the long run. You’re faced with a tough decision. This article will look at the positives and negatives of buying new and used vehicles. This will help you pick the vehicle that’s meant to be yours.

The Glory of New

There’s something powerful about the looks of a brand-new car, all the way from the tantalizing smell to that shiny new paint. In this consumer culture, a new car is a symbol that tells everyone you have made it. There also are other benefits to buying a new car rather than a used car.

Positives:

Most new cars do have good reliability. The warranty also will likely cover any problems that do crop up. Buying a new vehicle also means that you shouldn’t have to worry much about how the vehicle was treated before it became yours.

A number of companies also have roadside assistance for new cars. This gives you peace of mind and can save you the expense of getting a roadside assistance program on your own.

New cars also usually have the highest fuel-efficiency standards and the newest safety features, like side-curtain airbags. You may also find a good financing program with either no interest or low interest rates. This can make it less expensive to buy a new car than it is to buy a used car.

Negatives:

Without a doubt, buying a new car is expensive. Most new cars cost more than used cars, and they depreciate very quickly in value. A new car loses the most value during the first few years that someone owns it.

The difference between what you paid for your car and what it is now worth can be substantial. According to the Kelley Blue Book, the MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price) for a 2007 Ford Focus two-door hatchback is $14,335. The resale value for the same car is $11,995. The value has dropped about $2,300 just for driving the car off the lot.

Buying a new car therefore means that you are getting more debt and losing value more quickly than if you had bought a used car. You’ll also be paying more for car insurance than you would if you had bought a used vehicle.

There are also issues to think about on a deeper level. Buying a new car can contribute to the culture of consumption and not the culture of frugality. If you buy a new car, some would argue that you are buying into the consumerism culture. This can be an expensive proposition.

New cars also don’t stay new for very long. You eventually will find your first nick or scratch. Eventually, the floor will be stained, the doors will have dings, and you won’t have the thrill of having a new car. Your monthly payments will last much longer than your shiny new car.

A Humble Used Car

Although “pre-owned vehicles” - what the car dealers like to call a used car - don’t have the mystique and “shiny” factor of a new car, they are hard to top as a practical financial move. Buying a late model car with few miles can be a bargain seeker’s dream.

Positives:

Buying a used car helps you get the most amount of car at the lowest cost. A late-model used car often costs less than half the cost of a new car. Some dealers’ pre-certified programs come with good warranties. They often include the balance of the factory warranty and the opportunity to buy an extended warranty. Low-mileage, late-model used cars are almost new. You probably don’t notice the difference between a used and a new vehicle if you trade in your car every few years. Most modern cars can go 100,000 or more with few problems. You could probably get 60,000 more miles on a car with 40,000.

You can also buy a used car for only a few thousand dollars if you don’t have much cash and are willing to take a chance on a used car. Buying a care that needs a little tender loving care can cut the amount of money you need to spend on your “new” car.

Negatives:

Some used cars still have the stigma of being unreliable. There may always be a fear of buying someone else’s problem because you don’t know how its last owner treated the car, or why the last owner traded the car into the dealer. Even if the car is fine, you still need to perform maintenance sooner than you would on a new car. That maintenance will include radiator and transmission flushes, new tires, and new brakes.

It also may be difficult to find a used vehicle with the features you want. You also will have fewer options if you buy a lemon. Lemon laws usually only apply to vehicles under a certain age.

New or Used?

You should make your decision to buy a new or used vehicle based on many factors. You should be comfortable with your various financing options, as well as any long-term consequences. You need to feel safe and buy a vehicle that is reliable for your needs and meets your monthly expense budget. Your “new” car also needs to meet your requirements for amenities and features.

An integral part of pop or popular culture is extending one’s expression of style to his vehicle. Fads may be short lived, but what is more important is that it reveals strange and unique ways of expressing ideas. Car styling has, in agreeable yet unconventional ways, been able to create certain fads by beefing up the appearance of the vehicle. From window tinting to trim applications, vehicles have been stylized in accordance with the popular trends. Example may be cited of train horns being used in street vehicles roused some positive and also some negative impressions, but it was a bold statement nonetheless. The fads that train horns have created in pop culture appeals to the artistry, image and also annoyance of different groups of people.

The train horn is conventionally used to signal the arrival of the train or its proximity to the station. In sports it is used as the cue to certain actions or proceedings. Today, the train horn has become a part of the customized vehicle. It is in a way an attempt on the part of the car owner to deviate from the conventionalities of the vehicle and add to it something new, like the train horn and be able to enjoy a louder, intimidating and more aggressive way of honking down the street.

Although some people may not understand why certain vehicle owners spend a lot of money in restyling and modifying their vehicles, some perceive the act as a matter of self-gratifying expressions. While having wing doors and lowered car frames and bumpers may seem sleek and original to some group, some would differ from their preferences. All of this is a matter of expressions of views towards the existing popular culture. The popularity of using train horns as truck or car horns exemplified the impact of the fad brought by train horns in popular culture.

Aside from vehicles, train horns are used in a number of expressions. For instance, it is used as a distraction inside a noisy classroom, causing a moment of silence. Train horns may even be used as retaliation to the persistence of telemarketers or other harassing callers. This is in hope that blasting the phone with a deafening honking sound will deter future calls. When it comes to music, train horns may be collaborated with other instruments, completing a unique blend of tune and genre of music such as those observed in reggae music or reggae hybrid genre. However, the most popular application of train horns in popular culture is as trucks horns.

There’s a curious legal problem associated with the use of train horns in cars. Using a train horn is a mode of the right of self-expression and can this right be denied to any citizen. Yes, perhaps it can if it’s harming or disturbing others. Imposing decibel level restrictions was tried out once but the police found it impossible to enforce. The owners install them precisely for their loudness! But the horns are sold with markings indicating loudness that’s different from what is achieved, so clear proof of violation is impossible! Environmental sensitivity and consideration are needed but today’s macho show-offs lack both.

An audible security system that sounds when it notices a possible break-in is a car alarm. These car alarms can make a noisy disturbance which can be very annoying and a lot of the time is ignored. There are a lot more technologically sophisticated vehicle security systems that are available.

To help reduce the billion-dollars of car theft, manufacturers have developed innovative technology with two-way communication remotes to warn you when your vehicle’s engine is started and notify you why the alarm was activated. The most common options in newer car security systems include glass break sensors, a two-way communication remote and passive arming.

A noisy alarm just won’t be heard if you’re not near the car, and if you’re on vacation it could take days for you to even figure out that your car is missing. Certain types of car security systems will place an automatic call to a number you have specified (or send an urgent text) in case of a break in. Alarms that are two-stage can also tell you whether your car has just been jostled or if it is actually turned on and in motion.

If the vehicle is moving, you could communicate to the automatic car alarm to turn off the fuel pump, which will effectively stop the vehicle. Of course, if your car is on the back of a tow truck, stopping the engine will not prevent the theft. Many of the newer vehicle security systems are also equipped with GPS tracking devices to keep tabs on your vehicle’s location.

Keeping Car Jackers at Bay: Many vehicle alarm models come with a built-in anti-car-jacking mechanism, which allows you to cut the gas by just pushing a button. The switch is generally nearby the seat belt release, and once pressed it will cut off the gas and put on the brakes to bring the vehicle to a halt. This puts you in control when a dangerous situation might have made you a victim. Having this system means that you can be proactive in making sure that your car is always safe from being stolen.

Frequently, these systems will alert the authorities in case of a car jacking. The majority of these systems are meant to notify the police in an expedient manner which is immeasurably important in emergency situations. Trying to catch a car thief who is attempting to steal your vehicle is quite dangerous. Your automatic car alarm will inform you via a phone call or a text message when something is amiss. You can then call the authorities and let them handle the situation, rather than putting yourself at risk.

First of all let me congratulate you on never having to submit and insurance claim before. You are not missing out on a whole lot. Your day will come though when out of nowhere disaster strikes and you find yourself filing your first claim. The information listed below should be able to help you through that grueling process.

Before we get started, the best possible thing you could do for yourself before all of this is getting a cheap car insurance quote and by a policy that best suits your needs. This is very important and could save you lots of money.

So, with your new policy in your glove compartment, and your insurance companies card with your insurance agents name on it in your wallet you head out on the wide open road. Of course you are driving carefully right? Wouldnat want to cause an accident and have your premiums go up.

aScreech! Crash! *and%^!a Letas assume that the accident was not your fault, you were driving cautiously along, minding your own business, when out of nowhere, another car slammed into you. Thankfully, no oneas hurt. Call the police. Not everyone agrees that this is necessary, but Iave found that the insurance companyas are much easier to deal with when you have a police report in hand that says the accident wasnat your fault.

Now, say the accident was your fault, your kid just so happened to throw a shoe that ended up falling underneath the brakes. Hey, it happens. You probably wonat even have to worry about calling the police yourself because the other person has probably done it already. So sit back and wait for the drama to begin.

Once the police are on the scene, follow their lead. If one or both of the cars need to be towed or moved out of the roadway, the cops will help you figure things out. Provide the police officers with whatever information they require, which is likely to include a look at your driveras license and proof of insurance.

Once you are given the go head you head home, or to moms to cry on someones shoulder. You get out the card that your insurance agent gave you and call him. Be prepared to wait a while, put in your favorite movie. No I am not kidding unfortunately.

Eventually, a customer service representative will come on the line. Fill this person in on every detail of the accident, however mundane. They will probably ask you to mail them a copy of the police report. The representative will guide you through the whole claimas process, and can explain how the coverage you selected when you set up the policy will work. They can help you set up an appointment with an adjuster to assess the damage and with a body shop for repairs. Soon enough, you will have made it though your first claim and will be back on the road.

To be successful financially, you have to show some motivation and independent thinking. This includes the decisions you make regarding the type of vehicle you drive and some intelligent decisions you make regarding that choice. You can make a “wheel” difference to your net worth just by understanding how to make a cost effective choice regarding your means of transportation.

Your Purpose-Driven Car

Choosing a car does not have to take on the significance of a religious decision, but you should seriously consider why you think you need a car, if at all. If you cannot do without a car, it is sensible to be wise to the salespeople who will appeal to your desire for a status symbol. Choosing a car to look good will undoubtedly cost you in the long run.

Drive Vs. Alternative Arrive

According to the AAA’s study, “Your Driving Costs” (2006) it costs, on average, $8,000 a year to own a motor vehicle. The cost is higher for SUVs and minivans. It can be double that if you choose to update your luxury car every two to three years. These figures were calculated based on the car travelling 15,000 miles per year.

Think about it - do you really need a car so much that you are willing to spend such a hugh sum, when you can save thousands by car pooling or using public transport? This amount of savings would take into account the times you may need to call for a taxi or rent a car in absolute emergencies. If you are able to, it is also a great cost saving, as a new family previously on two incomes, to cut back to one car and therefore live on one income.

Why do cars costs so much? After all, there are all those ads that claim it only costs $299 per month! What they don’t tell you about are the high deposits required, or the sales tax, or the fact that the loan is over such a long period of time that what you are left with when you have finally paid the last instalment is a car that is not worth much at all because of depreciation. They also don’t mention the cost of fuel, maintenance, or insurance that has to be added to the cost of owning a car.

New Vs. Used:

It is mostly the case that a fancy new car with all the extras will cost you more than a late model used car. The new car will depreciate at a very fast rate. The used car has already gone through the worst of its depreciation and it will cost you around one third of the price of a new car. There is also the problem that a completely new model of car could have some unforeseen problems; it does not have any reliability records, so you don’t know what you are buying, nor do you know the potential repair costs.

One positive about purchasing a new car is the extended warranty period, which may balance out the cost of a new car against that of a used car, when you don’t know its service history.

Insurance

The most attractive cars attract the highest insurance premiums due to their desirability amongst thieves and they often cost more to repair. One example is that the humble Honda Accord that has an insurance premium around 20% less than the more desirable Acura.

SUVs usually cost more to insure as well because their repair costs are higher. It is usually the case that a late model used car will cost 10% less to insure than the same car when new.

Use, Convenience and Safety

For a number of people in high-powered positions, such as consultants or entrepreneurs who need to transport clients, their car can be seen as an extension of their “image”. Paying extra for the appearance and the added features of such a car may be considered a worthy investment. In some cases, a SUV may be justified, especially if you are required to transport clients and their luggage around.

When choosing a SUV, keep in mind that, whilst some of the “crossover” models have improved, more “car-like” handling, many still have problems with fuel efficiency and can be more prone to rolling or other accidents related to the handling of the vehicle than a standard passenger vehicle.

Should You Lease, Loan, or Fully Own?

It is a sad fact of life that, unless you are looking to purchase a true classic vehicle, your investment will depreciate. There are ways to keep the depreciation as low as possible and ways to keep the operating costs at their lowest:

Loser Leasing

At first appearance, leasing a car gives you a new asset in return for monthly payments that appear reasonable. In fact, leasing is in fact a loan on the biggest depreciating portion of the car’s life, that is, the first few years. The cycle repeats itself as you replace the old car with a new model, so you never see the benefits of reduced operating costs associated with an older vehicle.

Leasing can also be an expensive trap. Because lease contracts are far from simple, you may think that you have struck a good deal, when in fact you are paying hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars over the term of the lease that you should not have had to.

Swimming with the Loan Shark

You may find yourself in financial difficulties if you miss a payment and have to resort to extending the loan on a vehicle that is now worth less than the amount of the loan that you still owe. You may also find that the “great deal” you made with the dealer’s finance will cause you grief should you have to sell the vehicle in an attempt to repair your finances. It is better to arrange a loan with a reputable bank or credit union.

Cash In and Out on Ownership

Patience and cunning are the keys here. Researching a particular vehicle’s market value, finding the best dealers and having your possible purchase checked over mechanically before you pay cash for a fuel efficient late model used vehicle is a wise move financially. Why? Because the “middle years” of the life of a car are the least expensive when it comes to maintenance.

Paying cash for your vehicle also avoids the burden of monthly payments, which you can then put aside for the maintenance of the vehicle as well as saving some cash towards the purchase of your next (late model) car in the near future.

It is the case, though, that there are people who either don’t have the time or persistence or the ability to negotiate a deal to be able to make a successful cash transaction. The option for these people is to buy a late model vehicle that is high in quality but is not in the luxury category and simply running it until it “dies”. Yes, the maintenance costs will be higher as the car ages, but there will be no real value in the car to depreciate and as such the annual running costs will be less for the ensuing years when you can keep it going until you can buy another late model or new car.

If it is necessary for you to purchase a new car, make sure that it is as reliable and as fuel efficient as possible.

By the Light of a Silvery Moon Roof

If a new car is your option and you are going to sell it on before the maintenance costs become too high, you should ensure that you maximise the marketability of the vehicle and keep the depreciation as low as possible. Some cars depreciate very quickly, so choose carefully.

There are some “extras” that will help the vehicle maintain its value, including sun/moon roofs and better seating. Safety features such as airbags don’t, but they should be a consideration purely for their safety aspects and they will be a plus with the insurance companies and when you are ready to sell the vehicle on, they will increase the chances of someone buying the vehicle.

Drive Down Your Car Costs

There is good news and bad news. The good news is that with the advancement of safety features in vehicles, insurance costs have become lower. The bad news is that poor drivers will see their insurance premiums skyrocket - only the good drivers will see the benefits of lower premiums.

It is obvious, then, that you will save a great deal of money when you have worked out these skills:

When you are in the process of negotiating a new lease or purchase, don’t fall prey to the what is listed in “special extras” of many car companies, for example, extended warranty periods. You might be paying more on what are not necessary. Paying for extras might affect your credit report rating.

Do your homework regarding the reasonable price of a good used car, so you know where you stand, whether you are buying from a dealer or privately.

Find the best mechanics that will give you the best deal.

Go for a more fuel efficient vehicle and one that is reliable, but be wary of the hybrid claims as they are often much more expensive to purchase initially and their repair costs are higher.

Make sure that your insurance cover meets all of your needs.

If rising gas prices have you worried and you have the interest and skills to do basic mechanical jobs on your vehicle, you may want to consider installing a hydrogen gas saver in your car. Among the benefits that you can see by installing this system are increase in gas mileage, considerable reduction in emissions and reduction in operating costs. Further, hydrogen gas is environment friendly, making it even more worthwhile.

There are two routes to installing a hydrogen gas saver system. There are plans available for purchase for the person who is handy or knows someone who is. The items to build this system can be found at most automotive outlets, home improvement stores or specialty distributors. Depending on your plans and where you purchase your supplies, the construction of your hydrogen gas saver can run anywhere from less than $200 to several thousand dollars. There are plenty of internet sites where you can purchase step-by-step instructions to install so-called water for gas units.

Hydrogen gas saver kits work to produce hydrogen gas from water by using the electric current from your vehicle’s battery system and injecting it into the air fuel mixture already in your car to improve combustion and fuel efficiency. In effect, it works as a small hydrogen plant in your vehicle. Hydrogen gas saver kits are available for any type of vehicle. Whether you are driving a family sedan car or powering a yacht there’s a system available for you.

If you don’t want to tackle installing a hydrogen gas saver kit yourself, the best way for adding hydrogen power to your vehicle is to have a hydrogen gas saver system professionally installed, by either a manufacturer or a licensed installer trained and certified by a manufacturer.

It is hard to find installation centers for hydrogen gas saver vehicle conversions in areas without access to a hydrogen fueling station or production facility. If there is not an installation center nearby, you can contact the installation center closest to you and get information on where the nearest center is located or details on how to ship your vehicle to that particular installation center. Many installation kits also list people that can make and install systems if you decide this is the option for you.

Most companies offering kits to convert your car to a hydrogen hybrid claim that these installations do not affect your vehicles manufacturers warranty, you should check with your selling dealer or even the home office of the vehicle manufacturer. And by all means make sure you write down the name of the person you spoke with good or bad.

No matter what type of installation you choose, converting your vehicle’s fuel to a hydrogen gas saver model can be the right choice for your wallet and the environment. Certain kits might even qualify for a tax credit from the IRS when tax time rolls around putting even more money in your pocket.
